In its more than 65-year history, Car and Driver has received numerous awards, but this is the first award: the American Magazine Editorial Association (ASME) has awarded us the 2022 National Magazine Awards.
The winner belongs to the category of General Excellence – Special Interests.
Editor-in-Chief Tony Quiroga accepted the award and a trophy designed by Alexander Calder, at a ceremony in New York earlier this week.
It’s awards season, and that means not only the Oscars and Grammys but also for magazine and digital publishers, which are the 2022 National Magazine Awards.

This year, Car and Driver was honored with what the American Magazine Editorial Association (ASME) called “the most prestigious honor, General Excellence.” The C/D took home the trophy in the Special Interests category, the first time we were honored as such, and the upcoming classic cover photo depicting test director Dave VanderWerp flying through the air in a Ford Bronco set a memorable backdrop to the EIC Quiroga’s acceptance speech.

The winners in the other Best Common categories were The Atlantic, Harper’s Bazaar and Stranger’s Guide, while The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Southern Living and The Verge were among the winners in other categories including Report and Public Interest. Below is the full list of ASME’s candidates and winners for 2022.

The National Journal Award was established in 1966 and is administered by ASME along with Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. The prize is a statue modeled after alexander calder sculpture “Walking Elephant”.

ASME’s accreditation is based on our three print magazine issues from 2021: June, July/August and September. In accepting the award, Quiroga also acknowledged former editor-in-chief Sharon Carty, saying she had “challenged us to cover an industry that is changing very quickly.”
